Every week some where in America someone is put to death. Some writers: Capote, Mailer have written and witnessed the ritual - theoretically made’ humane’ that is to say the diluting of the satanic drama of hanging, burning (electrocution the modern version) or the most lethal and quickest Madam Le Guillotine - death by lethal injection. America so back ward in incarceration (now mostly privatized) and putting to death a still beating heart. Guns, murder, violence, assassination - gangster-ism on the streets and in Washington, every man armed and dangerous with military style assault weapons, Mac the knife now almost a paragon of virtue and yet even as the political climate continues to divide and alienate itself there is still that Yankee cool, and a place for the familiar gifted democratic process.
Science at any given time is always only partly right. Science agrees that knowledge and discovery are infinite - Religious assumptions are held together by faith and threat or promise in an expectation (Heaven, God,Hell, etc) that has no proof outside of cynical posturing and intimidation. There is no evidence for omnipotent theism, what is evident over centuries of existence and contortions to accommodate the reality of found facts, is propagated by the so called ‘keepers of the flame’ based on a claim of access to the all powerful patriarchy.
Most endemic in our species is tribalism and the need to form patterns of behavior that constitute hallmarks of the pseudo political religious tribe. Society is like a great slumbering Mammoth and in its troubled dreams the works of Einstein, Freud, Darwin and many others filter up to the verbal consciousness and so the tribe must adapt or be left behind.
Looking back on the Armstrong debacle the Tour De France has hosted a combination of varied stimulants and chemical aids of one kind or another. England’s lone champion of the Anquetil era Tommy Simpson died on his bike whilst climbing the Mont Vontoux in hellish heat and exertion - contrary to myth he never said ” put me back on my bike” although plenty of trashed riders have. What killed Simpson was the overwhelming need to not slip from the pantheon of greatness - as with Armstrong Tommy flew in some ways literally as well as symbolically to close to the sun, and on the wast land of the Ventoux he died.
Knowing as I do the elements of denial around all types of chemical dependency it becomes also an examination of a need for a story of life over adversity set in the dramatic arena of mountains and epic sporting confrontation and victory, not just of a race but over adversity. The story of Icarus has been acted out many times in sport, politics, theater etc - what I’ve heard called the glittering prizes. Armstrong in order for him to survive the deception had to believe it himself, but as with all denial the truth kept emerging prompted by his own psychi together with friends and associates cast out from his inner circle. As Shakespeare said at the end of Romeo and Juliet ’ all are punished ’ I, who worked in rehab for many years intuited that he doped but it didn’t occur to me that this type of dependency produces the brutish arrogance and victimization of the life of the so called street addict. Like any user/dealer he would go to any lengths to protect the myth and we all became complicit in the belief and denial
Some times there is the moment of truth - in a press interview he said cynically ” Cancer survivor comes back wins the Tour De France seven times - they like that ” .

Push me of the edge
I have no issues here
The temple of mediocrity
creation finds predation.
All the worlds a superb
of the land fill now
Where patient buzzards
Expect that all things
Not met by the new order
Will arrive alone - stultifying
sunk by greed
And worn by natures cruel victory
but justly so
I wish not to argue or explane
I have not the strength
to go again, so!
push me of the edge
there is a sort of comic dignity
In solitude only I must keep moving
When still, and be still when moving
But wait, don’t bother coming here
Put your feelings on the shelf
Having thought a bit I’ll jump myself.

The self described ‘keepers etc’ have over centuries contorted themselves to explain to a gullible flock the fallabilities of the all powerful, all seeing, deism, is funny and absurd, as are there contortions to explain science and its proofs from Galileo. Einstein. Darwin onward.
A question to religious charlatan Pat Robertson predictably ” why does God allow such terrible things in the world ” . They have intermissions during which they flog some money making scheme. I knew what the answer would be and waited for confirmation - the good old Satin who once was as it were in Gods patronage - the implication being that every person who defies or even questions Gods omnipotence sides with Satin against him. Note the patriarchal overtones. There seems to be no accountability for the ravings of these people with there manipulative and psychotic protection racket which if such an element existed would make the ghosts of the Mafia smile.
They and others in these huge tax free corporations profligate a protection racket cloaked in benevolence and sanctimoniousness if only they would call it as it is - if there is a hell on earth it could be described as a life wasted in the expectation of something beatific in that mythic unsubstantiated other place.
" Learn from the mistakes of others - you cant live long enough to make them all your self " Eleanor Roosevelt.
The modern trend in recovery seems in part not abstinence but that old Jester control and self will. So appealing to the addict who hopes to be taught how to still use one of the many mood altering intoxicants and limit the use and consequences. There’s an old joke that apply’s ’ try telling a man with dysentery to not shit his pants. ‘
